THE POSITION/THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

This Engineer role placement is based on a combination of factors including education, years, and type of experience, and registration as a licensed Civil Engineer in California.

Senior Civil Engineer Level

The Senior Civil Engineer will work under the guidance of the Assistant Director to review land development applications, working closely with the Community Development Department. The key responsibility for this role is the successful supervision of the Land Development engineering team. They will collaborate with internal and external consultants for Land Development and meet with contractors, developers, and department management in order to successfully drive projects to completion. They will be comfortable keeping contractors on track to finish and representing the City in conversations with vendors. Due to the collaborative nature of this position, a diplomatic, respectful, and engaging individual is ideal. The Senior Civil Engineer will thoughtfully balance project ownership with team collaboration.

Associate Civil Engineer Level

The Associate Civil Engineer will be overseen by the Assistant Director. They will work closely with the three others in the Land Development Division—an Inspector, Assistant Engineer, and Junior Engineer; as well as an experienced Senior Engineer (working part time) who will be able to participate in training and supporting the successful candidate in their new role. This job level is a generalist position with technical construction knowledge required and organizational skills highly desired. The candidate will be comfortable meeting with state, federal, local districts, agencies, consultants, and engineers to discuss project guidelines, design parameters, policies, and procedures. The Engineer will drive projects toward completion while referring to the principles of the City of San Rafael – service, community, integrity, communication, reimagining the status quo, and finding creative solutions to problems.
