Job Description

The City of Ventura Water Department is looking for experienced water distribution operators to join
the team. We are seeking candidates who enjoy working on a team and are ready to take a lead role in
managing a crew in a complex, D5 water system environment while working a 4/10 schedule! Interested

Currently, there are two full-time positions available that the City is looking to fill immediately. This
recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies.

Candidates possessing a D2 certification and who have successfully completed the D3 examination are

What You’ll Do
Reporting to the Water Distribution Supervisor, the Lead Water Distribution Operator III/IV directs
work and trains employees in the technical aspects of installation and maintenance of water distribution
and service facilities, including valves, hydrants, air/vac's, meter, and services. Utilizing Lucity AMMS,
the Lead Water Distribution Operator develops work orders and determines the priority of work,
optimizing work crews’ time and abilities in the installation, shutdowns, maintenance, replacement and
disinfection of water mains, valves and appurtenances, such as installing and relocating fire hydrants
and making up to 12-inch taps on water mains. This position oversees the annual flushing program and
provides oversite of regulatory discharge requirements and best management practices as applied to
NPDES with the use of NoDES flushing truck. In this role, the lead operates heavy equipment, such as
backhoe, skip loader, tractor, boom truck and attachments, crew trucks, dump trucks, valve operating
trucks and performs minor acetylene welding and cutting.

Position Qualifications
A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and
three (3) years of related water system maintenance experience, one year of which should be in a
journey-level capacity.

Prior supervisory or lead experience and/or training highly desirable. Formal training in the following
areas is highly desirable: confined space hazard prevention, asbestos safe handling and disposal, traffic
safety control and flagging.

License:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver license is required. Within 6 months of employment,
incumbent is required to obtain and, thereafter, maintain a valid California State Class A license with
Auto Transmission and Air Brakes Restrictions - No Endorsement. Pursuant to the Department of
Transportation (DOT) regulations, drug testing is required.

Certificate:
Lead Water Distribution Operator III: Possession of a valid California Water Resources Control Board
Grade D3 Water Distribution Operator certification OR possession of a D2 certification and successful
completion of the D3 examination, and possession of the D3 certification within one year from the date
of hire/promotion.

Lead Water Distribution Operator IV: Possession of a valid California Water Resources Control Board
Grade D4 Water Distribution Operator certification.

The City offers a compensation package that includes both a generous salary and excellent benefits!

Salary: $82,763.20 - $105,726.40 Annually
