On Jan 1, the city and county of Los Angeles will partner on a new pilot program to aid individuals in need of emergency mental health assistance.
Improved mental health response has been a big component of the recent push for police reform. Advocates say the deployment of unarmed mental health experts is one way to reduce conflict between police and individuals struggling with psychiatric issues or drug abuse.
The County Department of Mental Health operates a similar program already. With the city’s involvement, mental health experts from the county will be placed at five L.A. city fire stations and tied into the 911 emergency system.
