Nearly 8,000 people have signed a petition to have Stockton, California featured in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Fantastic Four film. The campaign, led by Visit Stockton and promoted by Mayor Kevin Lincoln, is using the hashtag #Fantastic4Stockton.

The Central Valley city was declared the birthplace of the superhero quartet back in 1986 after a petition drive led by comic store owner Al Greco. Stan Lee even presented a proclamation in front of City Hall declaring Stockton as the birthplace of the Fantastic Four.

Stockton has been mentioned in a few of Marvel’s comics, but never on film. Mayor Lincoln hopes that’s about to change.

“Stan Lee once said that Marvel is a reflection of the world right outside our window — a home for all people and all stories no matter their race, gender, religion or color of their skin,” Lincoln said in a video promoting the campaign. “Stockton, named the most diverse city in the nation, lives up to Marvel’s stance. Our community is excited for the opportunity to expand our existence in the Marvel universe and onto the big screen.”
