The City of Arcata seeks an experienced and engaging Human Resources/Administrative Services Director (Director) who will oversee the day-to-day management and oversight of the human resources and administrative services functions within the City Manager’s Office (CMO). Under the direction of the City Manager, the Director will oversee an approximate budget of $2 million and 10 staff within the CMO. This hands-on leader will be eager to build relationships across the City, as they will regularly provide support and advice to department heads and staff. They will build up their team through motivational and inspiring leadership and demonstrate strong communication, emotional intelligence, and collaboration skills. THE JOB

The Human Resources/Administrative Services Director (Director) will oversee the core administrative and HR functions of the City Manager’s Office: Human Resources, City Clerk, Procurement and Contracts, Risk Management and Insurance, and Information Technology and Communications. They will oversee an approximate budget of $2 million and a dedicated staff of 10, including eight direct reports. While reporting to the City Manager, the Director will serve as a technical advisor to the City’s department heads and staff, often advising on payroll processing, recruitment and selection, compensation and classification, employee benefits, labor and employee relations, grievances and discipline, and other matters as they arise. They will serve as a key City representative and liaison between departments, outside organizations, and the public while evaluating the efficiency of the City’s systems and processes.
