The State Controller’s Office recently published annual compensation data for public employees in California. The updated Government Compensation in California (GCC) website reflects pay and benefits for various positions in cities, counties, special districts, and state government in 2022.
A list of the highest-paid employees in the state can be found here. No. 6 is the former city manager of Montebello, who took home an astonishing $1,000,000, thanks to a lump sum severance payout. The former city manager of Palmdale took home $719,484, which was the second-highest in the state. Most of that money – $632,810 – was also a lump sum.
The city manager with the highest salary was Sacramento’s Howard Chan. He earned $493,655 in regular pay in 2022.
